Renewable Energy In Orkney

Today 5/6S, 6M, 6E and the Eco-Club listened to a talk from Danny Bain (Robertson and Bain Consulting Group) and Ryan Doull (Orbital Marine).  This talk was to link in with the Energy Topic we are studying and linked into the Global Goals that the Eco-Club and school are working towards.

Danny gave us some background on energy and why we need it, before discussing the different types of Renewable Energy.  He also talked about his job and the variety that it offers.

Ryan then talked about the work he and Danny did in developing a world-leading tidal device, SR2000.  We learned about the process that Ryan went through to create the final design which has harnessed the most power of any tidal device.  This is a project which involved several Orcadians!

Finally, we talked about Danny and Ryan's path into their chosen career.  It was interesting to learn that both men didn't know what they wanted to do when they left school.  They both took completely different career paths and have been able to use the transferable skills learned along the way in their current sector.

Thanks very much to Danny and Ryan for coming in this morning to talk with us.  Thanks also to Mrs Ewing for arranging.  Perhaps we have some future renewable energy workers amongst us!

Papdales Netball Teams get a smart new look

The Primary Netball Competition at Picky on Saturday was an extra special day for the Papdale School Netball teams as they were wearing their brand new netball tops for the first time.
Trek and Travel owners David and Katie Foulis supplied the tops for all of our P6 andP7 netball teams and have been strong supporters of Papdale’s Sports teams over many years as well as being the approved supplier of Papdale School tops.

Harvest Festival and the last hurrah!

For our Harvest Festival today there was a special collection in aid of the Foodbank with lots of items donated for this very good cause.

It was also the last opportunity to say goodbye to our Head Teacher Mrs Bruce who retires from her post at Papdale on 31 October. All the classes had written statements saying why Mrs Bruce was such a special Head Teacher, and announced these at assembly. It was a very special and emotional moment for Mrs Bruce and the children.

Staff v Pupils Football

The teams for this years contest were very well matched and the game could have gone either way. The Staff scored the first goal but the pupils deservedly equalized before half time. Mr HIll struck his second goal of the game early in the second half to regain the lead and despite several scares and pressure on the staff goal as they tired towards the end they held out for a 2-1 victory.
On the balance of play a draw would probably have been a fairer result.

Staff v Pupils Netball

The Netball was played in fantastic weather conditions with both teams showing good skill in a keenly contested first half. The teams were close at half time with the staff holding a narrow lead but the heat saw both teams tire a bit in the second half with the staff increasing their lead to retain the shield.

Mrs Bruce was on hand to present the trophy to the winning captain, Mrs Coltherd. A special thanks also to Karen and Kirsty Burns who came to spectate but agreed to referee the match at very short notice!

Toilet Twinning Fundraising lead by the Eco Club

Eco Club displaying some of their activity ideas for the Fundraising

On May 16th, the Eco Club lead a whole school Eco Action Day based on Clean Water and Sanitation.  A whole host of fun activities were planned: wordsearches, colouring in competitions, a treasure hunt and physical challenge activity all based around learning more about clean water and sanitation both here in Orkney and throughout the world.  We successfully raised enough money to donate to Toilet Twinning.  We have now provided four community toilets in the Dominican Republic of Congo and two individual ones in Nepal.

Our pupil voice is strong here at Papdale and we continue to care about our future and make a difference.  Well done!

P6S Gilbertson Day Centre visits

P6S have been taking part in an inter generational project which involves weekly visits to the Gilbertson Day Centre to spend some time with the old folks. The children and old folks both seem to be enjoying the experience and plans are afoot to return the hospitality by inviting the old folks back to Papdale before the end of the session.

22 Papdale players took part in the P4/5 tournament at Picky on Saturday. Coach Leah Rendall said that they all did absolutely brilliantly and she was proud of every single one of them. They all  represented Papdale perfectly trying their best, having fun and showing great sportsmanship.

The Pugs and the Peacocks were the two P4 teams and Pumas and Parrots the two P5 teams.   Papdale Pumas reached the final losing very narrowly to Stronsay Limpets 3-2.

We'll keep the green flag flying here!

The Eco Clubs hard work has been recognised once again after achieving the third annual renewal of the Eco Schools Green Flag Status.

In the awards letter it stated, "It was obvious from your submission you young people and school community are committed to protecting the environment. You have achieved so much since your last assessment, you have obviously worked very hard to reach your targets outlined in  your Action Plan. Well done!

To celebrate all children who had been part of the Eco Club over the past three years helped raise the flag.

A surprise visitor ???

We had a surprise visitor this morning who certainly attracted lots of interest before line up.
A frog had wandered onto our netball court and despite trying to tempt him with some grass and a Tuc biscuit the children were unable to tempt them back into the safety of the grass.

Mr MacKinnon came to the rescue to lift them back into their more natural habitat.

Who are these people??

This grass is very hard and a very strange colour!

Much more fun than lining up for school!
